Active English is an approach for teaching grammatical understanding and developing vocabulary to primary-aged pupils from Year 1 to Year 6. It uses principles of mnemonics to embed learning in an active and engaging manner, providing pupils with a deeper grasp of language and its application within writing that serves as a foundation for their future.
The approach is:
- Visual, giving pupils ‘hangers’ for their learning.
- Develops communication skills
- Provides a ‘common language’ which is understood by all, providing consistent approach for all.
- Unpicks the elements of language
- Enables deep-rooted learning
- Is research-informed
“Explicit teaching of foundational skills, including spelling and handwriting, sentence construction, control of grammar and use of vocabulary, allows all pupils to write effectively.” DfE: March 2024 – Telling the Story: the English Education Subject Report)
